Upgrading from Opera 3.62

Can I use my Opera 3.62 bookmarks with version 5?

Yes. If you install Opera 5 over Opera 3.62 then the old bookmarks file will be converted automatically to the new format when you start Opera 5 for the first time. A delay will occur while Opera processes the file so it may take a little longer to start. Once running, you will find your old bookmarks placed in the root folder of the Opera 5 Bookmarks manager. From there you can create folders and organise your bookmarks, edit them, assign nicknames (for use in the Address Bar) or even search the database to find bookmarks/URLs more quickly.

Note that once the Opera 3.62 bookmarks file has been upgraded it cannot be recovered. There is no utility to convert the Opera 5 file back to the old format and the Opera 5 Bookmarks Manager sadly lacks the ability to export as HTML or TXT. If you think you may use Opera 3.62 again you should make a backup of the original bookmarks file before installing Opera 5. You can find the file at:

C:\System\Apps\Opera\Bookmark.ini
Can I use or import other bookmarks?

Opera 5's Bookmarks Manager cannot import bookmarks from other Web browsers (including MSIE and Netscape), however some browsers will allow you to export bookmarks as a HTML file which you can then load in Opera as a normal document.

If you have previously been using Web 2.x on your Symbian device then this method is the most convenient way to use your old bookmarks with Opera 5. The only other option is to manually create each bookmark in Opera and paste the URL/title from Web.

Can I have Opera 5 and v3.62 installed at the same time?

Unfortunately this is not possible as both versions share the same application ID. Installing them onto different drives will only confuse your Symbian device and lead to some files in the Opera folder on the C drive becoming corrupted.

Quick update: A small utility is now available which will allow you to toggle between both versions of Opera on your EPOC device without needing to reinstall or remove either version.

Does Opera 5 require more RAM and disk space?

Opera 5 is a larger application as it includes many new features and improvments. A clean install of Opera 5 will require around 2.5MB of disk space.

RAM consumption can vary as there are now extra Cache and display preferences which can affect this, however in most cases it's roughly the same as Opera 3.62.

Can I install Opera 5 over the top of Opera 3.62?

Yes, by installing Opera 5 over version 3.62 you will preserve your bookmarks, cookies, and most of the user settings.

When you first start Opera 5 it converts the Opera 3.62 bookmarks and cookies to the new format, however old Disk cache files will be ignored. Unless you had Opera 3.62 set to empty the cache on exit, those files will remain in the Opera folder wasting disk space. Once you have installed and started version 5 you may wish to tidy the folder and remove these files. To do this, close Opera 5 (it must have been started at least once) and locate the following folder:

C:\System\Apps\Opera

The original bookmarks file will have been destroyed when it was converted to the new format, however the following Opera 3.62 files will remain and can be deleted:

To delete the old cache files which are ignored by Opera 5, delete the following folder and all of it's contents:

C:\System\Apps\Opera\cache

The only cache folder used by Opera 5 is cache4. If you intend to revert to Opera 3 in the future be sure to create a backup of the whole Opera folder before installing Opera 5. Cookies and bookmarks cannot be converted back to the old formats.

Will I lose any data when I upgrade?

You shouldn't lose any important information when you upgrade. Bookmarks, cookies, and the Global History list are preserved, and almost all user settings will be carried over to Opera 5. Any Disk cache data will be lost however, as will Opera 3.62's record of visited links so pages will colour all links as new.

Will upgrading make Opera unstable?

Absolutely not. Although some Opera 3.62 files are left behind they are ignored by Opera 5, and any old data used by version 5 is first converted to new formats automatically. Providing you have installed Opera from it's normal SIS file and have not manually interfered with files in the System folder you should not experience any problems.

What benefits are there in upgrading?

Opera 5 provides greatly improved Javascript, CSS and HTML support, and introduces support for XML, XHTML, and DOM. Other refinements include a powerful bookmarks manager, downloads manager, improved cache managment helped by support for HTTP 1.1, cookie filtering, plugins, a more informative Progress bar, and support for iFrames and multiple windows. Opera 5 can also identify as other Web browsers to reduce the change of poorly designed sites excluding you without good reason.

Overall, Opera 5 is a faster browser and is even more standards-complient, so wide pages are now almost always rendered in a way which makes them fully accessible. Opera 3.62 sometimes displayed floated elements off-screen, yet did not allow you to side scroll to view them properly. Version 5 has improved memory managment so it runs for longer and more smoothly when memory becomes low. Background images no longer disappear when you scroll a page. Notable differences in the way Opera 5 renders Web pages can be seen in the screenshots section of this site.
