JPEG rendering in Opera

This page shows screenshots of the same JPEG image displayed in Opera 5, Opera 3.62, Symbian Web and Neuon nConvert.

In Opera 5 the image quality is very poor as it is unable to apply dithering and fool the human eye into perceiving more colours than the machine is capable of displaying. On a greyscale screen many JPGs will seem as though they have been drawn using 4 shades. Dithering effects work better when viewed from a distance but are extremely useful on PDAs, even models with a 256-colour screen.

Symbian Web provides the clearest picture though Opera 3.62 with Dithering and Smoothing enabled is almost as good and renders much faster. nConvert is shown here just for reference as it displays JPEGs through the Sketch application. It renders JPEGs fairly well however the colouring of dithered images is less faithful to the original as those decoded in Web or Opera 3.62.
